Duvili Falls
Duvili Falls is located within the Balangoda Pradeshiya Sabha area, adjoining the Bellangala reserve and
connected to the Walawe River. Originating from the Walawe River, this waterfall cascades down to a height of 131 feet,
creating a spectacular mist that spreads around like fine dust, giving the fall its name “Duvili” (dust).
When sunlight passes through this mist, a rainbow can often be seen. Archaeological discoveries reveal that the
“Balangoda Man,” considered the earliest human in Sri Lanka, was found in the nearby Bellanbandi Palassa village,
close to this waterfall. It is one of the five Duvili falls in Sri Lanka, and folklore suggests it was first discovered by an English governor during an elephant hunt. Villagers believe that the waterfall was created by God Saman, and a
legend says that a prince once hid his golden ornaments in a cave within the fall while preparing for battle.
Locals also believe that golden tusks and a golden couch are hidden in the depths of the water basin below the fall.
The Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council has declared the area a conservation zone, and the Forest Department has set aside
300 acres as Sri Lanka’s first medicinal forest. Rare medicinal plants such as Aralu, Bulu, Nelli, as well as endemic
butterflies like “Lethe dynsate” and unique birds like the “Galloperdix bicalcarata” (Ceylon Spurfowl) can be found here.
The waterfall can be reached by traveling 25 km along the Balangoda–Kalawana road, turning left, and proceeding 3 km further.
There is a vehicle park above, with steps leading down to the waterfall, through a beautiful forest filled with birdsong.
Although the walk is tiring, the stunning beauty of the fall makes it worthwhile. The Balangoda Pradeshiya Sabha has developed
the area as a tourist zone, with resting benches, a children’s park, and a ticketed entry system.
